Career

Before joining the court, Judge Gomez was a partner at Holland & Hart, where her practice focused on appellate litigation in state and federal courts.  Over the course of her fifteen years at the firm, she chaired the appellate practice group; served as the administrative partner for the Denver office; was a founding member and a co-chair of the women’s forum; and served on the diversity committee, the associates committee, and various other committees.  She also spent hundreds of hours on a variety of pro bono matters.

Previously, Judge Gomez was a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Charles A. Pannell, Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia.

Activities

Judge Gomez co-chairs the court of appeals’ Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity, and Anti-Racism (IDEA) committee and is active in several other committees at the court.  She is also a member of the Appellate Rules Committee and the Colorado Bar Association appellate subsection.  She is a graduate of the Colorado Bar Association Leadership Training program.

Judge Gomez is a co-editor for the The Colorado Lawyer appellate practice column and is a chapter author for the Colorado Appellate Handbook.  She frequently writes and speaks on a variety of issues relating to writing, appeals, and access to justice.

Volunteer Work

In 2010, Judge Gomez served on the committee that formed the Colorado Bar Association Full Representation Program, which pairs self-represented litigants with pro bono attorneys in select cases in the Colorado Supreme Court and Court of Appeals.  She chaired the program’s screening committee and worked on a handful of cases for the program from its inception up to the time she joined the bench. In 2019, she formed the committee that created the Colorado Bar Association Civil Appeals Clinic, which now provides free legal consultations to self-represented litigants in civil appeals in the Colorado Supreme Court and Court of Appeals.  She still serves as a member of the advisory committee that oversees the clinic.

Judge Gomez has volunteered substantial time with other service organizations, including Meals on Wheels, the Capitol Hill Community Services Soup Kitchen, Boy Scouts of America, and Girl Scouts of America.  She has also organized and participated in various service projects over the years.

Honors & Awards

While she was in private practice, Judge Gomez was repeatedly listed as a Rising Star and then a Colorado Super Lawyer and as a top lawyer in 5280 Magazine.  In 2016, the Colorado Women’s Bar Association Foundation named her as a Raising the Bar honoree for maintaining a significant and sustained commitment to pro bono services.

Education

Judge Gomez received her B.A. in English Literature from Millsaps College.  She received her J.D. from Harvard Law School, where she served on the Board of Student Advisors, was an editor and author for the Harvard Journal on Legislation, and served as a volunteer with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and the Hale & Dorr Legal Services Center.
