General Statement Of Duties

Provides assistance to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Work involves sensitive and complex work of a legal nature.

Distinguishing Factors

Positions in this classification are distinguished from other Appellate Court Assistants by providing private assistance to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The Appellate Court Assistant III serves in a classified, non-certified position that is considered at-will and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.

Essential Functions Of the Position

Composes, edits, and transcribes correspondence of a legal nature.

Prepares correspondence concerning legal matters; secures information from public records; proofreads legal materials; compiles reports.

Prepares information and answers questions in order to relieve the Chief Justice of quasi-administrative and technical procedures. Serves as liaison for internal and external communications concerning the chambers.

Maintains the Chief Justice's calendar and coordinates activities related thereto.

Checks advance sheets for accuracy. Arranges the weekly conference file for the Chief Justice; indexes and arranges opinions, writs, and petitions in proper order. Prepares announcement sheets, opinions, writs and petitions for rehearing; removes all documents from case files and makes proper disposition thereof.

Checks opinion drafts for accuracy and calls attention to errors or changes. Prepares opinions for distribution and publication.

Maintains and collects statistical information.

Maintains files and records.

Prepares the Supreme Court's weekly announcement sheet.

Convenes and facilitates the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals' Nominating Commission when vacancies occur.

May train and supervise law clerks and interns.

Attends meetings and training as required.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisor Responsibilities

Responsible for one's own work product and may provide guidance, assistance, or mentorship to less knowledgeable or experienced coworkers, volunteers, or interns. This may include scheduling of work, instructing in work methods, and reviewing work products. May provide input into the hiring processes. May have input into the performance evaluation process.

Minimum Education

Graduation from high school supplemented by secretarial or paralegal courses and four years of experience with the Colorado Judicial System, law office or other comparable experience

OR

Graduation from an accredited Paralegal program or completion of at least 2 years of law school.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk; sit; use hands and fingers and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

Occasionally handles emergency or crisis situations; subject to multiple interruptions, phone calls, and inquiries. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
