General Statement Of Duties

Responsible for providing primary case management functions for juveniles placed in the Motivation, Achievement, Power (M.A.P.) truancy problem solving court program. This includes accurate assessment, appropriate case management, referral to appropriate services, follow-up, school/home visits, and documentation/data collection.

Distinguishing Factors

This position is distinguished from probation officer work by the focus on providing case management to juveniles placed by the court into a truancy program due to a civil case filing.

Essential Functions Of the Position

Assessments:

  • Accurately complete and score assessment instruments in a timely manner (may include but not be limited to the: collection of demographic/intake data, pre- and post-test questionnaires, MAYSI-2, School Refusal Assessment Scale, CRAFFT, NCTSN Trauma Screening Tool, etc). This includes interviewing the juvenile and any collateral contacts available (including the parent or parents) to accurately complete the assessment instruments.
  • Provide completed assessment results to the Coordinator for data entry and/or enter them if the Coordinator is unavailable.
  • Prepare any necessary reports, including recommendations, based upon information gathered from the assessment instruments and additional information gathered.

Curriculum Delivery:

  • Prepare and deliver cognitive-based curriculum to juveniles and/or their parents (such as MRT) on a pre-determined schedule. This includes preparation of material, facilitating the group, approving completed assignments, and preparing any necessary paperwork related to attendance and/or completion, etc.).
  • Assist in tutoring juveniles after school in various subjects, as needed.

Case Management:

  • Meet with juvenile, parent, or collateral contacts as needed throughout the course of the case to perform primary case management functions in truancy cases.  Meetings will include primarily school visitation and home visits. Contacts shall be consistent with the needs of the case.
  • Role model and reinforce principles being presented in CBT curriculum. 
  • Utilize assessment data and gathered information to assist juvenile and family as appropriate in meeting goals set forth in the Treatment Plan.  Make appropriate recommendations and/or referrals for services based upon assessment instruments and information gathered throughout the course of the case.
  • Utilize MI and other evidence based techniques to increase motivation to change behavior.
  • Respond to non-compliant behavior in an appropriate and timely manner. 
  • Recognize and reward positive behavior change as it occurs.
  • Attend and participate any multi-disciplinary team meetings as appropriate.
  • Attend and provide relevant case information at all M.A.P. staffings and court reviews scheduled.
  • Maintain regular and appropriate contact with collateral sources and service providers. 
  • Provide coverage for Truancy Court and/or perform related duties.

Documentation/Data Collection:

  • Provide accurate and timely narrative entries on any actions taken in the case in the designated format. Narrative entries shall reflect the current status and progress made in the case.
  • Enter information into the designated software or on designated data collection forms.
  • Maintain data related to specified outcomes.
  • Assist in the preparation of any necessary reports and submit required documents in a timely manner.
  • Participate in the ongoing analysis of program effectiveness, suggesting changes and implementing them as appropriate.

Perform other relevant duties as assigned.

Supervisor Responsibilities

No formal supervisory responsibility. Responsible for one's own work.

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university with major course work preferably in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, Social Work, or related field. Upon hire and as a condition of continued employment, the employee must:

  • Complete the basic safety and defensive skills course offered through the Colorado Judicial Branch
  • Complete mandatory and new employee training required by the Colorado Judicial Branch
  • Complete additional ongoing training required by the Colorado Judicial Branch and or training offered through the Division of Youth Corrections.
Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms. The supervision responsibilities will require the ability to defend oneself and/or remove oneself from potentially harmful situations. Specific vision abilities required by this job require close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus. The position requires the ability to travel.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. This position is subject to varying and unpredictable situations; may handle emergency or crisis situations; is subject to many interruptions; may handle multiple calls and inquires simultaneously; and may occasionally handle absentee replacement on short notice.
