General Statement Of Duties

Summary of Job Classification:
Provides professional verbatim reporting and transcribing for court proceedings, hearings and conferences. Employees in this classification have successfully obtained their Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certification through the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA).

Essential Functions Of the Position

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform assigned essential functions listed below satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Frequency and percentage of time may vary based on assignment.

Records testimony using stenography in various types of courtroom proceedings. Maintains and sets up equipment including Real Time equipment at Bench and attorney tables. Pauses court proceedings to clarify language as needed. Reads back portions of the record during hearings and trials as requested by parties. Provides real time transcription to the Judge. Acts as custodian of record for admitted exhibits during hearings and jury trials.

Edits, proofreads, and produces certified written and electronic verbatim transcripts for judges, attorneys, private agencies, and the public. Provides rough draft transcripts to judges upon request for review of the record and to assist in making decisions/rulings. Meets strict statutory deadlines for transcripts and appeals. Researches various terms and specialties for the completion of transcripts that contain testimony by expert witnesses.

Performs administrative duties including billing for transcripts, completing record-keeping forms, documenting information contained in reports, and maintaining records according to statutory requirements. Forwards completed transcripts to the Court to be stored per Record Retention guidelines.

Receives and files exhibits collected during hearings and jury trials. Uploads stenographic notes to the server monthly per Record Retention guidelines.

Purchases and maintains court reporter equipment and software, including steno machine, real time software and cables, subscriptions for the ability to provide real time to the Judge, NCRA membership dues, CCRA membership dues, computers, laptops, USB drives, and transcript covers.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisor Responsibilities

Work requires the occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees. The work performed by majority of employees is semi complex.

Minimum Education

Education and Experience Equivalency:
Associate's degree or 2 years of college.

OR

Additional work experience in these or other related fields may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required formal education.

Work Related Experience: 
Less than 1 year of related experience.

Licenses and Certifications: 
RPR certification through the NCRA.

Physical Effort Requirements:
Medium Work- Exerting up to 35 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
