General Statement Of Duties

Provides professional library work for the Colorado Supreme Court or a judicial district library.

Distinguishing Factors

Law Librarian are distinguished from other law library positions by the full range of library responsibilities required, including operating a judicial district library or serving as assistant to the Supreme Court Librarian.

Essential Functions Of the Position

Responsible for the preparation and payment of all library bills. Maintains the records of all payments. Some positions may perform budget analysis and recommendations, and allocate collected funds appropriately.

Conducts legal research and assists patrons in referencing library materials on-line or hard copy. When appropriate, offers other services including interlibrary loan or referrals to other libraries or information centers.

Maintains contact with judges and justices in determining individual library needs both in the library and for each individual chamber. Distributes and maintains library materials such as statutes to individual chambers.

Assists in the recruitment, selection and termination of employees for the unit or other libraries.

Assists in establishing expectations and providing employee performance feedback on an on-going and annual basis. Assists subordinates in establishing goals.

Assists in determining appropriate duties and responsibilities for subordinate staff; develops and establishes procedures for operating and maintaining required administrative systems.

Maintains communication with other libraries, as well as with other state, federal, and municipal agencies, when requesting or supplying materials needed by other courts or agencies.

Attends meetings and training as required.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisor Responsibilities

Responsible for one's own work product and may provide guidance, assistance, or mentorship to less knowledgeable or experienced coworkers, volunteers, or interns.  This may include scheduling of work, instructing in work methods, and reviewing work products.  May provide input into the hiring and discipline/termination processes.  Normally has input into performance evaluation process.

Minimum Education

Graduation from an accredited American Library Association college or university with a master’s degree in library science or information science and one year of experience working in a law library; or, Juris Doctor Degree and one year of experience working in a law library.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk.  The employee frequently is required to stand; sit; reach with hands and arms; and frequently perform repetitive motions with wrists, hands, and fingers; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and high precarious places.  Occasionally handles emergency or crisis situations; frequently subject to interruptions, and multiple calls and inquiries.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
