General Statement Of Duties

Manages the activities and operations required to maintain the Colorado Judicial Department’s iSeries servers running OS/400 operating systems, LPAR architecture, database administration and associated storage devices, and various other systems in support of the Department’s IT infrastructure.  Work involves consultation, planning, design, installation, configuration, administration, and maintenance of relevant systems.

Distinguishing Factors

This position is distinguished from the Systems Engineer series by the responsibility for supervising professional Information Technology staff.

Essential Functions Of the Position

Leads the iSeries systems team, which may include iSeries Software Engineers, in support of the Judicial Department’s strategic objectives.

Supervises assigned staff; screens, prioritizes and assigns tasks and projects; counsels, trains and coaches technical staff; develops staff skills and conducts performance evaluations; coordinates the recruiting, selecting and terminating of employees for the team; provides recommendations regarding subordinate's employment probationary/trial period, and responds to leave requests.

Reviews systems team incidents and reports in ITSM tool, manages iSeries systems team incidents and service requests to meet Service Level Agreements, performs problem management, and reviews, edits, authors and approves knowledge base articles.

Responsible for planning, architecture/design, and implementation of hardware and software installations, configurations, and decommissions.

Responsible for database administration for iSeries server implementations.

Develops scripting programs and automation processes using ILE RPG or Control Language (CL).

Responsible for monitoring and maintenance of relevant systems and associated hardware/software and provides support and troubleshooting for those systems when required.

Works to prevent data loss by configuring and maintaining backups and replication for important systems; works to prevent configuration loss by creating and maintaining documentation when requested.

Adheres to established change control procedures and assists the application development teams by promoting changes through the approved application testing and deployment process.

Acts as a resource to internal ITS staff, judicial districts, other state agencies, and/or other organizational units as directed. Displays leadership and mentoring for all other iSeries Systems and Software Engineer team members.

Responsible for DB2 for iSeries database administration, which may include monitoring, tuning and enhancing database performance; indexing and modifying SQL scripts; designing and managing triggers and/or stored procedures; and deploying database changes for the application development teams.

Provides Tier 3 support for relevant systems.

Develops and maintains good working relationships with vendors.

Travel throughout the state of Colorado is required at times, not to exceed 10% of the time.

Attends meetings as required.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisor Responsibilities

Has supervisory accountability for other employees, volunteers, or interns.  Plans, directs and coordinates activities for a unit.  Duties include scheduling and assigning of work, training in all facets of work, quality control, and decisions impacting the pay, status and tenure of others.  Conducts performance appraisals, and provides input into and participates in discipline, dismissal, and hiring processes.

Minimum Education

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a related field and four years of experience directly supporting either IBM iSeries server(s) and four year’s programming experience in ILE RPG and Control Language (CL).  At least one year of lead/supervisory level experience is highly desirable.

OR

Experience may substitute for education on a year for year basis as follows: graduation from high school or equivalent and four years working in computer related areas; four years of the computer experience must be directly supporting IBM iSeries server(s) with a minimum of four year’s programming experience in ILE RPG and Control Language (CL).  At least one year of lead/supervisory level experience is highly desirable.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.  The employee is frequently required to sit and reach with hands and arms and perform repetitive motions with wrists, hands, and fingers.  The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds or more.  Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, color vision, depth perception, ability to adjust and focus, and the ability to see clearly at 20 feet or more.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, work in high precarious places and the risk of electrical shock.  Frequently handles emergency or crisis situations and may be subject to varying and unpredictable situations and work hours.  The employee is subject to frequent interruptions, multiple calls and inquiries, and may occasionally handle absentee replacement on short notice.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
