General Statement Of Duties

Assists the Network Engineering team in managing the activities and operations required to maintain the Colorado Judicial Department’s network. This includes ensuring the stability and integrity of the Branch’s voice, data, video, and wireless network services.  The Network Engineer I installs, configures, monitors, maintains, supports, and optimizes network hardware, software, and communication links.

Distinguishing Factors

This classification is distinguished by providing support and maintenance for the Department’s network as a part of the Information Technology Services (ITS) Division. Employees in this classification report to the Lead Network Architect.

Essential Functions Of the Position

Monitors functions of network devices within the Department network to ensure acceptable performance.

Creates and maintains documentation related to network configuration, network mapping, processes, and service records.

Assists with installation and maintenance of network devices.

Troubleshoots LAN/WAN/WLAN and other network elements.

Coordinates with appropriate staff for problem resolution. Works with higher tier engineers on complex issues as required.

Acts as resource to ITS staff, judicial districts and external stakeholders regarding network.

Evaluates and implements hardware and software solutions for Department systems.

Supports Cisco Routers, Cisco Switches, Voice and Video over IP, QOS and Cisco Wireless networks.

Attends meetings as required.

Performs other duties as related to information technology systems.

Supervisor Responsibilities

No formal supervisory responsibility. Responsibility for one's own work product and work within a unit performing similar functions. Rarely provides lead function, advice, or explains work instructions to other employees or volunteers.

Minimum Education

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in computer science or a related field is required. One year of experience with Cisco routers and switches preferred.  Network + or CCNA certification preferred. 

OR

Information Technology experience may substitute for education on a year for year basis.  One year of experience with Cisco routers and switches preferred.  Network + and/or CCENT certification preferred.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to sit and reach with hands and arms and perform repetitive motions with wrists, hands, and fingers. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, color vision, depth perception, ability to adjust and focus, and the ability to see clearly at 20 feet or more.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, work in high precarious places and the risk of electrical shock. Frequently handles emergency or crisis situations and may be subject to varying and unpredictable situations and work hours. The employee is subject to frequent interruptions, multiple calls and inquiries, and may occasionally handle absentee replacement on short notice. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
