General Statement Of Duties

Summary of Job Classification:
This position assists in the coordination, planning and management of legislative activities impacting the Colorado Judicial Department.

Interactions may result in decisions regarding implementation of policies. Contact may involve support of controversial positions or the negotiation of sensitive issues or important presentations. Contacts may involve stressful, negative interactions with the public requiring high levels of tact and the ability to respond to aggressive interpersonal interactions.

Employee normally performs assignments according to your own judgement, requesting supervisory assistance only when necessary. Special projects are managed with little oversight and assignments may be reviewed upon completion. Performance reviewed periodically.

Advanced: Work requires advanced skills and advanced and extensive knowledge of work. Incumbent can handle complex tasks, and translate complex nuances related to aspect of the job. Recognized by others within the organization for technical depth of knowledge.

Essential Functions Of the Position

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function listed below satisfactorily. Track introduced legislation including monitoring of introduced legislation, tracking amendments, committee hearings, floor votes and publication of fiscal notes.

Maintain system to track legislation.

Coordinate meetings with stakeholders and staff.

Respond to request for information from stakeholders and legislatures.

Monitor, observe and listen to legislative hearings.

Provide support to the Judicial Department’s legislative fiscal review team. Review fiscal responses drafted by the team.

Provide assistance to other divisions in need of legislative information, research or other direct legislative work.

Conduct research on issues related to courts in Colorado and trends in courts across the country.

Collect data from various Judicial systems for current and upcoming legislative issues.

Report on data collection and trends for the courts.

Write issue briefs and fact sheets for stakeholders, legislators and district personnel.

Update and keep current contact information of stakeholders impacted by Judicial Courts legislation.

Attends meetings and trainings as required.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Job has no responsibility for the direction or supervision of others.

Minimum Education

Education and Experience Equivalency:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in public policy, public administration, political science or a related field.

OR

Additional relevant work experience may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required formal education.

Work Related Experience: 
One year of experience in legislative relations or legislative/policy analysis required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in political science, public policy, public administration or related field. Three years of working with state legislation in policy analysis or legislative relations.

Physical Effort Requirements:
Sedentary Work - Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
