General Statement Of Duties

Develops and coordinates the Colorado Judicial Department's communications, public education and information programs.

Distinguishing Factors

Positions in this classification are distinguished from other classifications by the responsibility for developing on Colorado Judicial Department communications, public education and information programs. It is distinguished from the Public Information Coordinator position due to a greater degree of judgment and discretion, procedure and policy development and implementation, and serving in a supervisory capacity over a unit. This position reports to the State Court Administrator.

Essential Functions Of the Position

Responds to media inquiries by gathering information and referring the media to appropriate resources.

Updates and edits the “Media Guide to Colorado Courts” annually. 

             

Works with the Colorado Bar Association and Colorado Press Association to provide workshops and round table discussions for the media about the courts statewide. 

             

Works with the Freedom of Information Council to represent the interests of the Judicial Department on access to information issues. Sets up editorial boards on issues important to the Department.

             

Assists in the development and implementation of detailed statewide public education project initiatives, including coordination of Supreme Court and Court of Appeals “Courts in the Community Program”.

             

Confers with district administrators, judges, and Public Education Committee to determine the public education needs; implements, budgets for, and evaluates projects of the Colorado Supreme Court Committee on Public Education.

             

Principally responsible for developing and implementing the internal and external communications plan for the Colorado Judicial Department. Annually updates the internal communications plan and obtains approvals from the Chief Justice and State Court Administrator. 

Manages all aspects of the social media outlets for the Colorado Judicial Department.

             

Serves as liaison to the Colorado Bar Association PEC, the Freedom of Information Council and Colorado Press Association.

             

Serves as an advisor to the programs and individuals within the Judicial Department on communications matters. Provides strategies for dealing with difficult issues publicly and for garnering positive press attention.

             

Attends meetings and training as required.

             

Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisor Responsibilities

Shares supervisory accountability for other employees, volunteers, or interns.  Plans, directs and coordinates activities for a unit.  Duties may include scheduling and assigning of work, training in all facets of work, quality control, and assists in making decisions impacting the pay, status and tenure of others.

Minimum Education

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in communications, journalism, judicial or public administration or a related field.  Master’s degree preferred.  Three years of experience in education, communications, court management or like field required.  Additional related work experience may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required formal education.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to use hands and fingers and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.  This position is subject to varying and unpredictable situations; may handle emergency or crisis situations; is subject to many interruptions; may handle multiple calls and inquiries simultaneously; and may occasionally handle absentee replacement on short notice.
