The Senior Unified Communications (UC) Engineer is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing the Colorado Judicial Department’s telecommunications infrastructure. This includes installing, configuring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all telephone systems and services, voicemail systems, and teleconferencing environments. This position will analyze and resolve telecommunications circuit issues and support user needs where required.
This classification is distinguished from other ITS job classifications in that the Senior Unified Communications Engineer position is focused on the technical telephonic equipment and systems, as well as teleconferencing equipment connectivity throughout the Department’s statewide technical infrastructure. The Senior Unified Communications (UC) Engineer acts as an escalation point for the UC Engineer I and UC Engineer II. The Senior UC Engineers focus is to complete projects, and on rare occasions, handle escalated technical requests. This position reports directly to the Lead Network Architect.
Act as an escalation point on troubleshooting Cisco/ShoreTel phone, Cisco Unified Communications products, and voice carrier issues.
Monitor managed services performance.
Communicate with vendors on SLA breaches and other related issues.
Escalate issues with TAC and Lead Network Architect.
Collaborate with other members of the infrastructure and technical service teams and vendors to ensure the safe and proper installation of data cabling, phone wiring and Unified Communications equipment.
Collaborate with other members of the ITS division on projects and issues.
Design and oversee Unified Communication projects with a goal of improving or expanding the current Unified Communication infrastructure in accordance with stated business strategy.
Monitor and identify capacity and performance issues for Unified Communications traffic to ensure continued and uninterrupted operation of Unified Communication systems.
Conduct site surveys and make recommendations.
Conduct research on emerging products, services, protocols, and standards in support of Unified Communications equipment, procurement, and development efforts.
Assist the Lead Network Architect with all contracts for Unified Communications equipment and services.
Interact and negotiate with various vendors for resolution of service issues and investigate innovative approaches to improve the Judicial Department’s Unified Communications systems.
Assist Lead Network Architect in coordinating district projects with Judicial Department leadership, County officials, and other government agencies.
Assist Lead Network Architect with courthouse infrastructure upgrade projects, which may include developing RFP & RFQ for voice services.
Attend meetings and training as required.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Some positions may have supervisory accountability for other employees, volunteers, or interns. Plans, directs and coordinates activities for a unit. Duties may include scheduling and assigning work, training in all facets of work, quality control, and decisions impacting the pay, status and tenure of others. May conduct performance appraisals, and provide input into and participates in discipline, dismissal, and hiring processes.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field of study and 6 years of experience in telecommunications or a related area.
Additional work experience in these or other related fields may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required formal education and certifications.
Cisco Collaboration or Telecom PBX certifications are required.

Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, color vision, depth perception, ability to adjust and focus, and the ability to see clearly at 20 feet or more.
Occasionally handles emergency or crisis situations; frequently subject to interruptions, and multiple calls and inquiries. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Travel throughout the State of Colorado is required at times, not to exceed 50% of the time.
