General Statement Of Duties

The Unified Communications (UC) Engineer II is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing the Colorado Judicial Department’s telecommunications infrastructure. This includes installing, configuring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all telephone systems and services, voicemail systems, and teleconferencing environments. This position will analyze and resolve telecommunications circuit issues and support user needs where required.

Distinguishing Factors

This classification is distinguished from other ITS job classifications in that the UC Engineer II position is focused on the technical telephonic equipment and systems, as well as teleconferencing equipment connectivity throughout the Department’s statewide technical infrastructure.  The UC Engineer II will act as an escalation point for the UC Engineer I. The UC Engineer II focus is to complete projects, escalated or overflow technical requests.  This position reports directly to the Lead Network Architect.

Essential Functions Of the Position

Administer add, move, and change requests, as well as new data or phone line installations as required.

Coordinate with vendors on open tickets and issues.

Troubleshoot Cisco/ShoreTel phones, Cisco Unified Communications products, and voice carrier issues.

Escalate issues with TAC and/or Senior Unified Communication engineers.

Collaborate with other members of the infrastructure and technical service teams and vendors to ensure the safe and proper installation of data cabling, phone wiring and Unified Communications equipment.

Collaborate with other members of the ITS division on projects and issues.

Design and oversee Unified Communication projects with a goal of improving or expanding the current Unified Communication infrastructure in accordance with stated business strategy.

Monitor and identify capacity and performance issues for Unified Communications traffic to ensure continued and uninterrupted operation of Unified Communication systems.

Conduct site surveys and make recommendations.

Provide guidance to junior level Unified Communication Engineers and assist with ticket escalations as needed.

Attend meetings and training as required.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisor Responsibilities

No formal supervisory responsibility.  Responsibility for one's own work product and work within a unit performing similar functions.  May have lead responsibilities including scheduling of work, instructing in work methods, and reviewing work products for a work group.

Minimum Education

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field of study and 4 years of experience in telecommunications or a related area.

Additional work experience in these or other related fields may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required formal education and certifications.

Cisco Collaboration or Telecom PBX certifications are required.

Physical Demands

The employee frequently is required to sit, use hands to handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10, pounds and occasionally lift/move 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

Occasionally handles emergency or crisis situations; frequently subject to interruptions, and multiple calls and inquiries.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  Travel throughout the State of Colorado is required at times, not to exceed 50% of the time.
