Application process opens for Underfunded Courthouse Facility grants

DENVER - The Colorado Judicial Department has opened the application period for fiscal year 2023-24 grants from the Underfunded Courthouse Facility Cash Fund to provide supplemental funding for courthouse facilities projects in the Colorado counties with the most limited resources.

Amanda C. Hopkins appointed chief judge of the 12th Judicial District

DENVER – Colorado Supreme Court Chief Justice Brian D. Boatright has appointed the Hon. Amanda C. Hopkins to serve as chief judge for the 12th Judicial District (Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Mineral, Rio Grande, and Saguache counties).

Judge Hopkins’ appointment is effectively immediately. She replaces the Hon. Michael A. Gonzales, who resigned as Chief Judge on July 14, 2023. Judge Gonzales will continue to serve as a district and water court judge.

DENVER – Following the May enactment of Chief Justice Directive (CJD) 23-02, which provides Colorado’s trial courts with uniform guidance for livestreaming criminal proceedings, Colorado Supreme Court Chief Justice Brian D. Boatright today signed CJD 23-03, Virtual Proceedings Policy, to increase access to Colorado’s trial courts through the continued use of virtual proceedings and remote participation.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A Family Law Day for the 4th Judicial District (El Paso and Teller counties) scheduled for June 9 will offer a variety of free services including one-on-one meetings with family law attorneys, classes and presentations.

The event, sponsored by The Justice Center, Colorado Legal Services, the El Paso County Bar Association and the 4th Judicial District courts and probation, will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the El Paso County Combined Courts, 270 S. Tejon Street, in Colorado Springs.

Eighth Judicial District DUI Recovery Court earns Academy Court status

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The DUI Recovery Court in the Eighth Judicial District (Jackson and Larimer counties) has been designated one of six National Center for DWI Courts (NCDC) academy courts.

The Academy Court Network, developed by the NCDC and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, identifies exemplary DUI and DWI courts that can offer training, receive staff from other jurisdictions for site visits, participate in research, and serve as national models for such courts.

12th Judicial District offers clinic on landlord/tenant law

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The 12th Judicial District Access to Justice Committee is offering a free clinic on landlord/tenant law on April 21 for anyone interested in learning more about the eviction process and legal requirements for conditions of rental housing.

The clinic, scheduled for 3-5 p.m. in the Alamosa Combined Court (8955 Independence Way in Alamosa), will feature a panel discussion on important updates to the law, with time for questions and answers. Panel members will include attorneys, judges, court personnel and law enforcement.

DENVER – The Colorado Judicial Department has opened the application period for fiscal year 2023-24 grants from the Court Security Cash Fund, which was enacted in 2007 to provide Colorado counties with supplemental security funding at facilities housing a state court or probation office.

John F. Neiley appointed Chief Judge of the 9th Judicial District

DENVER -- Colorado Supreme Court Chief Justice Brian D. Boatright has appointed the Hon. John F. Neiley to serve as chief judge of the 9th Judicial District (Garfield, Pitkin and Rio Blanco counties).

Judge Neiley will replace the Hon. James Boyd, who was appointed to the District Court bench in 2002 and appointed Chief Judge in 2006. Judge Neiley’s appointment is effective, July 1, 2023, following Judge Boyd’s retirement.

Gregory J. Styduhar appointed Chief Judge of the 10th Judicial District

PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado Supreme Court Chief Justice Brian D. Boatright has appointed the Hon. Gregory J. Styduhar to serve as chief judge of the 10th Judicial District (Pueblo County).

Judge Styduhar will replace the Hon. Deborah Eyler, who was appointed to the District Court bench in 2008 and appointed Chief Judge in 2012, upon her retirement on April 29, 2023.

12th Judicial District seeks applications for VALE Board vacancy

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The 12th Judicial District is accepting applications for one vacancy on the Victims and Witnesses Assistance & Law Enforcement (VALE) Board serving Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Mineral, Rio Grande and Saguache counties.

The five-member VALE Board provides grant funds to community and criminal justice agencies providing direct victim services in the district. Board members decide how to allocate funds for grants requested through a competitive application process.

Colorado Supreme Court seeks public comment as it considers Chief Justice Directives regarding the continuation of virtual proceedings

DENVER – Recent public health concerns caused Colorado’s trial courts to quickly change the way they had conducted business for more than a century prior. Public health policies and the courts’ concerns for public safety effectively put the brakes on in-person hearings. However, laws guaranteeing timely hearings did not pause, and the courts turned to virtual appearances and live streaming to continue operations during this time.

Eight participants to graduate from 4th Judicial District Recovery Court

Public comment sought on proposed changes to Chief Justice Directive 04-08 on child and family investigators

DENVER – The Colorado State Court Administrator’s Office has opened a 30-day public comment period for proposed changes to Chief Justice Directive 04-08, which sets the Colorado Judicial Department’s policy regarding child and family investigators (CFIs).

CFIs are appointed by a court to investigate, report and make independent and informed recommendations to the court regarding the best interests of the children in cases involving parental responsibilities including parenting time and decision making.
